Narrative and Narration

Here is the way in which I would describe what narrative is:
  • It is the structure of a story which pieces together events.

There are three narrative models which you can use to piece together events; Todorov, Propp and Levi Strauss.

For my AS production the narrative model which I seemed to use was Propp. In the opening sequence you are introduced to the two main characters: the villain and the female character would be the princess, as at the end of the film she would be the reward for whoever saved her from the villain.

The reasons why I did not use Todorov is because the first few clips show a complication and then further complications on the jump forward in time. Rather than Todorovs view of: Equilibrium, Disequilibrium (cause by an agent of disruption) and Re-Equilibrium.

My A2 production will contain the final narrative model of Levi Strauss. As my story line will contain several boys after one girl there will be quite a lot of rivallry between the boys (Hate) whereas they all are in love with the girl (Love). Todorov's theory is that narrative is motivated by a struggle between Binary Opposites, where one side of the story will represent 'right' and be the side in which the audience will identify and support.
